What is Specialist Accreditation? The Law Society of NSW operates the Specialist Accreditation Scheme to help the general public identify solicitors who have demonstrated expertise in a particular area of law.

Peter Merity Accredited Specialist Building and Construction Lawyer

Peter Merity has been practicing in the area of building and construction lawyer solely since 1993. 

Peter deals with both home building and large commercial disputes. His clients vary from large commercial builders and subcontractors to the small subcontractors and homeowners who need his guidance and assistance. 

Peters specialties are Security of Payment Act matters, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal and all court proceedings, mediation and construction claims both small and large.

Peter was first admitted in 1971 and commenced his legal career in the Commonwealth Attorney General’s Department in Canberra. In 1972 he was transferred to the Department’s newly established Restrictive Trade Practices Branch and was one of the three officers who formulated the Trade Practices Act 1974. He later joined the Builder’s Licensing Board of New South Wales where he became involved in building and construction law and set out to develop a specialty in that field.

Over the years he has contributed papers to journals and made submissions to Government and given numerous seminars on building and construction law.

In 1993 he commenced practice as a solicitor at Parramatta specialising in only building and construction law. In 1996 he obtained accreditation from the Law Society of New South Wales as an Accredited Specialist in Commercial Litigation Law with a sub specialty in Building and Construction Law. In 2005 he obtained the degree of Master of Construction Law from the University of Melbourne. In 2013 he was appointed a Member of the Law Society Advisory Committee on Specialist Accreditation and has prepares the mock file questions for candidates for accreditation as building and constructions specialists.
